Worst Mistakes to Make at the Airport

Sometimes getting to your gate at the airport is just half the battle of traveling. First there’s parking, then checking in for your flight, checking your bags (if needed), and then trying to get through security. And while going through this process is sometimes a hassle, there are things you should avoid doing which can help make this process go a little more smoothly.

Don’t forget to double check what you are packing

A lot of innocent pocket knives get confiscated by TSA because people forget they are in their pockets or bags. And while you may be the person that just honestly forgot, the TSA doesn’t know if you’re that person, or the person that’s going to try to attack people at the airport. In order to avoid any sort of questions or delays, double check everything before you leave for the airport. Make sure to check your kids’ bags as well as you never know what they may pick up when you’re not looking.

Don’t use forbidden words

There are certain words you shouldn’t say anywhere on the airport grounds….such as the word “bomb”. Especially anywhere near the TSA line! This also includes words that include the word such as “photo bomb”, “bath bomb”, “bombshell”, and “truth bomb” because no one is going to hear the other word…..they’ll just hear “bomb”.

Don’t get out of line

People that get out of line are then marked by the security cameras as suspicious individuals and you could be subjected to a full pat down. Make sure you have everything you need before you get in line.

Don’t fall asleep without setting an alarm

Sometimes your flight may get delayed and you’re left with extra time on your hands.  If you’re traveling solo, taking a little nap at the airport can be risky. Remember to set an alarm to wake yourself up or you may miss your flight.

Don’t wear bulky layers

Wearing bulky clothing or multiple layers can lead to extra security measures such as pat downs. Remember to take off all extra layers before going through the scanners in the security lines. This includes coats and hoodies. I was once told by TSA that for a woman, jeans that sag down can throw up a flag on the scanner. I don’t know for sure if it’s true but now I always make sure my pants are pulled up higher before going through the scanner.

Don’t wear shoes without socks

I can’t tell you how many times I see people in sandals or flip flops at the airport.  Even if it is summer, you should wear shoes with socks to go through security. The floors around the security area are dirty and everyone that is barefoot is walking on the same surface. Not only can it make your feet dirty but you could pick up other bacteria while walking through the security area barefoot. This is why they even recommend shower shoes in communal showers.  You can always change shoes after you’ve arrived at your gate if you really feel the need to.

Don’t forget your ID

Everyone is required to have some form of government ID when they travel which could either be a driver’s license or passport. The REAL ID act goes into effect on October 1, 2020. At that time, everyone must have a REAL ID compliant driver’s license in order to fly.  If you don’t have one, you may need to have a passport to travel. People who have driver’s licenses that expire after that deadline may need to consider renewing early or applying for a passport to avoid any complications at the airport.  Also, when traveling internationally, you will be required to present a passport book or card. Be sure that you have at least 6 months left before the expiration date or you may not be able to travel. Updates to the REAL ID act can be found at www.tsa.gov/real-id.

Don’t forget to take out your powder

There are new regulations on how much powder you can take on board a plane. Anything over 12 ounces is subject to additional security screening. This will heavily affect parents traveling with infants on formula. One option is to put extra powder/formula in a bag and check it at the airport. Excess powder is allowed in checked luggage. So in addition to taking out your laptops, electronic devices, and liquids, and taking off your shoes, make sure that you take your powder out as well.

The whole process of going through security can be time consuming and a little stressful, but avoiding these mistakes can help you get through a little easier.
